This includes the chemicals known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) that are currently contaminating r ain and drinking water resources worldwide. However, in 1962 there were many more chemicals polluting the environment, but their presence was largely unknown. Silent Spring, published in 1962, singled out DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), an insecticide, that was at the time being applied to agricultural land without discrimination.
